As we take in a deep breath, close our eyes, make a special wish, and blow out the candles on our birthday cake, we are feeling it all! We reflect on this rich, joyful eleven year history of ours.
Since that very first community cooks gathering in 2012, we have done so much…
We tried kale for the first time and we made delicious fudge brownies with super foods like beets and black beans.
We learned how to grow our own food with what we have available.
We learned how to plan, create, and operate our state’s only youth-led, youth-run farmers market.
We’ve incubated food enterprises and helped Black entrepreneurs grow their businesses.
We learned how to turn a vacant urban block into a vibrant urban farm and healing community space.
We learned ways to truly support our new moms so they and their babies are well.
We’ve sung “Grow Food” at the top of lungs and celebrated our youth who are the truth.
We broke bread and sat beside folks of different backgrounds, conversing about our lived experiences and our dreams for our futures.
We’ve cooked up hot meals to serve to families, elders, and individuals during the pandemic.
We’ve advocated for change and made changes at the federal, state and local levels to create food access.
We’ve used food as a tool to build health, wealth, and social change.
