VP of Finance and Administration

Appetite For Change (AFC) is a nonprofit social enterprise in North Minneapolis whose mission is to use food as a tool to build health, wealth and social change.  Appetite For Change envisions sustainable, equitable, local food systems, created and led by thriving, socially connected families and communities.

We are seeking a VP of Finance and Administration who is responsible for overseeing  all finance, accounting, and financial reporting activities, including the oversight of budgets, cash flow, revenue, expenses, and accounting and ensuring the ongoing improvement of efficiencies in financial systems and processes. 

The VP is responsible for planning for the strategic growth of AFC through financial forecasting, risk management and growing the organization’s financial and administrative capacity. 

Accounting oversight duties include the preparation of comprehensive annual and monthly financial statements, management of AP/AR processes, payroll, cash flow, and other daily operations.  The VP also oversees  Human Resources, volunteer, and office management operations and staff. 

This is a full-time position working primarily Monday through Friday day hours with occasional evenings and weekends.   Currently the position is a hybrid position. 

VP of Finance and Administration responsibilities include:

Manage accounting systems: Oversee the design and implementation of accounting systems, prioritizing strong internal controls, reporting, and analysis  

  • Manage AP/AR, and payroll systems, reporting, and check requests
  • Oversee the accuracy and timeliness of  bookkeeping and accounting administrative operations  
  • Review and disperse weekly financial status reports across programs and business lines
  • Track variations in expenditures to ensure accurate billing and adherence to budget
  • Manage reconciliation of cash vs accrual, and reconcile banking on a monthly basis
  • Oversee and delegate work to Accountant

Cash flow management: Oversee weekly monthly, quarterly, and annual cash flow both real time and projected to ensure accurate organizational health

  • Provide weekly updates on current status, and variance to budget
  • Oversee the reconciliation of business accrual vs cash on a daily and weekly basis
  • Provide weekly analysis of current and predicted run rate

Financial reporting: Ensure timely, accurate, comprehensive, predictive, and analytical reporting for AFC leadership and board on a regular schedule

  • Provide management with short- and long-term financial objectives and policies
  • Provide weekly income and expense reports to leadership
  • Provide monthly comprehensive financials including: QuickBooks reconciliation, balance sheet updates, variance to budget with analytical narrative, tracking of unresolved accounts
  • Prepare quarterly financial reports for leadership and board
  • Prepare annual reports for audit 
  • Review and analyze financial conditions and forecasted operations, identifying possible opportunities and improvements 

Annual Budget and Audit: Lead and manage both the annual budget process and external audit procedures 

  • Ensure accurate and swift responses and resolutions;  Complete all annual audit preparation before the audit is scheduled, collaborating effectively with external auditors 
  • Schedule and facilitate quarterly reviews, and provide data upon request to interested parties
  • Represent financial data and analysis to our board of directors’ finance committee, and represent the organization in that committee
  • Make ongoing updates to whole organization and department level budgets; Provide regular analysis, updates and review to all budget-related functions and activities 

Leadership: Serve as an active role model and advocate of the organization’s mission, values, and culture.

  • Proactively collaborate with the leadership team and staff to achieve the AFC mission and vision 
  • Professionally represent the organization to the community
  • Actively engage to support Board meetings and Board-related communications 
  • Make decisions that balance both the non-profit mission and the business imperatives of AFC
  • Plan and manage departmental budget in the context of the broader AFC budget, understanding and leading financial management processes for the department
  • Ensure compliance with internal policies and procedures and government regulations

Effectively manage staff

  • Recruit, interview, select and hire qualified employees
  • Provide regular guidance, support and decision-making to direct reports
  • Establish, communicate and monitor performance expectations and standards and provide respectful performance feedback to employees 
  • Identify and resolve employee relations and performance issues, partnering with Human Resources as needed
  • Foster a friendly, inviting, and comfortable environment for staff to realize their potential 

Qualified candidate should have:

    • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field is preferred, or equivalent experience
    • CPA or advanced degree preferred
  • Five or more years of demonstrated success in nonprofit accounting and auditing, required 
  • Expert QuickBooks knowledge 
  • Experience in and/or strong exposure to overseeing administrative functions of a nonprofit organization, preferred
  • Experience in restaurant or retail sales operations preferred
  • Experience managing payroll systems and processes
  • Solid, proven budget management skills including budget preparation, analysis, decision-making and reporting
  • Strong strategic abilities including collaborating, planning, delegating and task facilitation
  • Excellent computer skills, including Advanced Excel skills, Microsoft Word, Outlook, Internet, Google Suite, Salesforce experience or other CRM, and other applications
