Building Health, Wealth, and Social Change

Food is a key ingredient to nourishing well-being, but systemic barriers in North make fresh food access a challenge for many. Through our youth and workforce development programs and policy initiatives, we build the community capacity to engage with the food system in a fresh and sustainable way.

AFC grows food across the Northside and in 2022 we began using our deep winter greenhouse to extend the MN growing season. We grow over 10,000 lbs of fresh fruits and vegetables each year, using them in our cooking workshops, catering/cafe and are sold at the West Broadway Farmers Market

Our free cooking workshops are BACK! We offer youth, community members, and new or expecting mothers a space to explore preparing and enjoying new ingredients and nutritious recipes. Check out the AFC calendar for the 2023 workshop dates.

Community Cooks Meal Boxes bring the workshop home, delivering locally-sourced ingredients, fresh recipes, and cooking tips to more than 400 households every week.

AFC trains and employs teens and adults through our programs and enterprises. We offer the space and resources for young people to become agents of change in North Minneapolis. With several training programs and employment opportunities, participants develop their leadership skills while learning and participating in hands-on urban farming, culinary, community organizing, and job readiness training.

Youth Employment

The pandemic created a need, and AFC met the challenge by joining our friends at Kitchen Coalition to deliver fresh, restaurant-quality meals to our Northside neighbors and other surrounding communities.  Since beginning in April 2020, we have prepared and distributed more than 482,000 fresh, delicious and culturally familiar meals across Minneapolis and St. Paul.

More on AFC Meals

AFC has been a founding partner of both Northside Fresh, a network of community members, organizations, and businesses working together for food justice in North Minneapolis; and Metro Food Justice Network which is building relationships, sharing resources, and advocating for policy change. AFC is a thought leader in collaborating to create more equitable food systems and is working to shift how we work together.
